Reflux disease – “Constant heartburn”
The incidence of reflux disease has increased tenfold over the last 30 years, and it is one of the most common diseases of the digestive tract.1
One in five people in the Western population suffers from heartburn. If this symptom occurs frequently and impairs quality of life, it is referred to as "reflux disease". It is considered a chronic disease.

Professional diagnosis of reflux disease
Although this condition is common, it can be difficult to diagnose. Owing to the increasing variety of possible treatment methods, comprehensive diagnostic assessment is essential. After a thorough diagnostic work-up, the findings are discussed on an interdisciplinary basis at a "reflux board", where the individual therapy is discussed and decided.
Treatment of reflux disease
The therapeutic spectrum ranges from sophisticated drug therapy to laparoscopic fundoplication.
Our structure and way of working
The first examinations and treatments usually take place with the office-based members of the Reflux Centre, who will make an expert decision as to whether further diagnostic assessment is necessary.
2. DiagnosticsThis detailed diagnostic assessment is then carried out at the Visceral Medicine Centre at the Ev. Diakoniekrankenhaus Freiburg. Beforehand, we will discuss all necessary measures with you during the reflux consultation at the Ev. Diakoniekrankenhaus Freiburg.

4. ProcedureOnce the detailed examinations have been completed, the findings are discussed at a regular interdisciplinary reflux board and individual treatment is determined. The findings and possible treatment are then discussed with you in detail.
Should interventional or surgical procedures be necessary, these are carried out at the Ev. Diakoniekrankenhaus Freiburg.
